Dr. Lonnie Carton, a family therapist and educational consultant, serves as chief information officer for WARM2KIDS, a web-based family and school support system. She was the director of Family Support Services for Boston Partners in Education, and currently serves as its consultant. She hosted the nationally syndicated feature "Take a Minute for the Family" on the CBS-Radio network and author of NO is a Love Word! Dr. Carton served as senior editor of "Education Today", a nationally-distributed publication for families of school-aged children.
Having helped hundreds of families resolve minor
issues and major crises during her career, Dr. Carton is now
helping parents and children successfully navigate the rough
waters of the middle-school years through an insightful program,
"Stepping Into Adolescence." Dr. Carton encourages
parents and children alike to take advantage of the opportunities
the middle-school years provide to successfully cross the
bridge from childhood to adolescence.
This presentation leaves a lasting impression
on parents by helping them understand the doubts, fears and
emotional upheaval their children face during these critical
years. Incorporated into every presentation is her 4 "Rs"
theory for success that captivates parents and helps them
make their own adjustments during this challenging time. Whatever
the issue, these guidelines can help improve communication
and make relationships between parent and child closer.
The 4 "Rs"
Right Information
Responsible Role Modeling
Regular Supervision
Reinforcement of Family Values
"Stepping Into Adolescence" addresses
the variety of parent/child issues that can emerge during
the middle-school years with wit, humor and practical advice.
Dr. Carton not only entertains, but motivates parents to broaden
their understanding of why the challenges they face exist,
and how they can reinforce the bond between themselves and
their children despite those challenges. The goal is to ensure
that parents and children realize that they are not "Stepping
Into Adolescence" alone, but together.
Dr. Carton tells parents that the middle-school
years, while sometimes difficult, can provide a wealth of
opportunities for parents and children to strengthen their
relationship and to prepare children for the challenges they'll
face even beyond adolescence.
The Seven Senses: Are You Using
All of Yours?
During her presentation, Dr. Carton lists seven
senses parents should remember to promote successful relationships
with their children during the critical adolescent years.
Five of those senses are listed below, but can you guess
the remaining two senses?
Seeing
Hearing
Smelling
Touching
Tasting
